How a horn player is making music for vets

A dozen years ago, Steven Behnke, a horn player studying at Manhattan School of Music, volunteered to put together an ensemble to play for the Memorial Day festivities in his hometown of Ridgefield, New Jersey. He recruited some fellow brass players, and they assembled on the green. He made sure the repertoire was filled with patriotic tunes.
“It always bugged me when our high school band played for ceremonies like Memorial Day that we didn’t do anything patriotic for the soldiers being honored.” This time his brass quintet played such old favorites as “America the Beautiful” and “When Johnny Comes Marching Home Again.” Toes were tapped, melodies hummed, tears wiped away and hands raised in salute during “The Star-Spangled Banner.”
That got Steven to rethink his own future. He had always assumed that, after graduation, he’d audition for orchestra jobs or play in the pit for a Broadway show, but what if he could put together a group, as he’d done for Memorial Day, that would play exclusively for veterans’ events? Too often at memorials, “Taps” would be a recording instead of a real bugler. “I thought of all those veterans from World War II and the Korean War who were having memorial services. They deserved better.”
Steven had gotten a taste of the power of music from his own grandfather. “I didn’t know much of what he’d done during World War II, except that he’d lost toes to frostbite in the Battle of the Bulge,” he says. “He was not easy to talk to.” But then his grandfather moved in with Steven’s family.
