NADINE COVEY Bellevue, Nebraska

My daughter, Sandy, and I decided to move in together. We wouldn’t have room for two households’ worth of stuff. A yard sale was the obvious solution. I’d sell my furniture, and we’d use hers. “We can donate the money we earn to the church,” Sandy said as we set up everything outside my house the morning of the sale. “I asked God to help us raise around $350. That would help pay for a new roof.”

Along with the furniture, we had a wide selection of books in good condition, jewelry and kitchen items for sale. And that was before my friend Alma arrived with some items of her own: an upholstered rocking chair and five pairs of children’s shoes.

Folks stopped by all day. The kitchen items were popular, and

we sold a lot of books and jewelry. Only the furniture failed to generate much interest. “Just wait until my neighbor comes by,” Alma said as we sat out with the cashbox in the scorching sun. “She’s sure to take some.”

The minutes ticked by. We sold more books and the last few pieces of jewelry, but the furniture remained. By five o’clock, the three of us were so hot and tired that we decided to put everything to the curb for people to take for free. “I’m surprised my neighbor never showed up,” Alma said as we dragged over a chair together. She decided to give her a call. Turned out, her friend was running late. She arrived shortly with a truck.

“This is perfect!” Alma’s friend cried when she saw all the free furniture. She actually danced in the street.

“Wow, she’s really happy,” I said.

“She’s got five children, and they recently lost everything in a fire,” Alma explained. “We’ve all been praying for her.”

“How awful!” I said, whispering a prayer of thanks that my furniture could help out. She even took home those shoes Alma had brought: One pair fit each of her five children.

“God sure answered those prayers for that family,” I said to Sandy that evening. “And we made a little money to donate to the church as well.”

“Yes, we did,” said Sandy, counting the last few bills. “Three hundred and fifty dollars to be exact!”
